John C. Kotz, a State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College at Oneonta, was educated at Washington and Lee University and Cornell University. He held National Institutes of Health postdoctoral appointments at UMIST in England and at Indiana University.
He has coauthored three textbooks in several editions (INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, AND THE CHEMICAL WORLD) and the GENERAL CHEMISTRY INTERACTIVE CD-ROM. He has also published on his research in organometallic chemistry and electrochemistry.
John was a Fulbright Lecturer and Research Scholar in Lisbon, Portugal in 1979 and a Visiting Professor there in 1992. In 1991-1992 he was a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Chemical Education (University of Wisconsin) and in 1999 was an Overseas Visitor at Auckland University in New Zealand.
He has received several awards, among them a National Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 1998 Estee Lecturership in Chemical Education at the University of South Dakota, the 1999 Visiting Scientist Award from the Western Connecticut Section of the American Chemical Society, and, in 2001, the first annual Distinguished Education Award from the Binghamton (NY) Section of the American Chemical Society.
