William Cronon is the Frederick Jackson Turner and Vilas Research Professor of History, Geography, and Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, he serves as the director of the Center for Culture, History, and Environment at the university's Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. His book Nature's Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West won the 1992 Bancroft Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for History.
