James Parakilas is Professor of Performing Arts at Bates College, where he teaches courses on music history and culture, music theory, and musical performance. He is the author of numerous publications, including Ballads Without Words: Chopin and the Tradition of the Instrumental Ballade, and Piano Roles: 300 Years of Life with the Piano.
