Richard J Bernstein has been an American philosopher of note for over a half century. Educated at the University of Chicago and then Yale, he has taught at Yale, Haverford College, and the New School for Social Research. Among his honours are numbered the presidencies of the American Philosophical Association (Eastern Division), the Charles S Peirce Society and the Metaphysical Society of America. He has received numerous awards for teaching, has been the editor of The Review of Metaphysics (1965-71) and Praxis International (1980-84). He has received fellowships or grants from the Fulbright Commission; NEH; ACLS; the Franz Rosenzweig Research Center, Hebrew University; the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin; and the Forschungkolleg at Frankfurt University. Bernstein has published numerous books, many of which have been translated.
