Theodore Canot (real name Theophile Conneau) was born in Piedmont, Italy, in 1804. He spent his first 50 years of life as an outlaw slave trader, and afterwards as France's official agent of colonization in the southwest Pacific Ocean colonial territory of New Caledonia. He died in Paris December 22, 1860.
