After university [Oxford, Manchester] I happily taught history to boys in a large comprehensive school in London and miners’ kids in Yorkshire. Pushing onwards and upwards, I eventually became college principal, a role for which I was unsuited. I escaped into early retirement, finding happiness again as an Open University tutor, National Trust guide and particularly in research and writing.
