From 1963-1967 Bruce Hartford was a full-time Civil Rights Movement activist, first with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and then as a field secretary for Dr. King's organization the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He participated in the March on Washington, the Selma Voting Rights Campaign and March to Montgomery, the SCOPE voter registration campaign, the Meredith March Against Fear in Mississippi, and the Grenada Mississippi Freedom Movement. While attending San Francisco State College he was a member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and part of the historic 1968-69 student strike for open admissions and Third World Studies. In 1970-71 he was a freelance journalist in Asia reporting on the Vietnam War. In later years he was a Silicon Valley technical writer and a founding member and long-time officer of the National Writers Union (UAW/AFL-CIO).
