David Watkin was educated at Christ’s College Cambridge and Westminster Hospital Medical School. After surgical training he became consultant general surgeon at Leicester Royal Infirmary and then clinical sub-dean at the University of Leicester. He was on the council of the Association of Surgeons, then became its president.
