Born Mary Christianna Milne in the Far East in 1907, Christianna Brand grew up in India before returning to England. Death in High Heels, her debut novel, was published in 1941. In the same year Heads You Lose was published and featured one of her best-loved characters, Inspector Cockrill, who went on to appear in seven of her novels. Green for Danger is perhaps Christianna Brand's most famous novel and was made into a film in 1946 starring Alastair Sim.

She was nominated three times for an Edgar Award and was also the author of the children's series Nurse Matilda, which was recently adapted into the film Nanny McPhee.

Christianna Brand died in 1988.
