George grew up in the west of Scotland at a time when vegetables (if you don't count chips) were still quite a rare sight. He realized how enjoyable food could be while studying in France, and later discovered the delights of simply prepared fresh foods while living in Greece. The first meal he remembers learning to cook was spaghetti bolognaise and chocolate mousse. He is an omnivore, but draws the line at Marmite and tripe. Formerly Editorial Director of Granta Books, he is now a freelance editor, translator and podcaster (for publishers and literary festivals).
