Sara Hawks Sterling was born March 4th, 1874 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to Dr. John Sterling and Mary Eldridge. She spent her life in the Philadelphia area working as an English teacher at various educational facilities. She authored several books in her lifetime and was considered an authority on Shakespeare. Largely forgotten today, she was an early female contributor to the Arthurian and Robin Hood canons. She died December 26th, 1936 of pneumonia, which she caught after directing a Christmas play for the Philadelphia High School for Girls.
