Thomas Wharton was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and lived in Jasper for several years before moving to Edmonton to complete a B.A. and M.A. in English at the University of Alberta. He completed a Ph.D. in English at the University of Calgary in 1998, and now lives in Edmonton with his wife, Sharon Avery, and his children, Mary and Conor. He is the author of one previous novel, the multi-award-winning Icefields and is currently at work on his third novel, set in the present day.
