Sassafras Lowrey is an author, dog trainer, and the 2013 winner of the Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Award. Sassafras’ books have been honored by organizations ranging from the American Library Association to the Dog Writers Association of America. Sassafras is a winner of a 2020 Muse Award from the Cat Writer Association and holds an MFA from Goddard College in Fiction.
Sassafras is a member of the Dog Writers Association of America and The Association of Professional Dog Trainers. Sassafras has toured widely giving readings, workshops, and keynotes at colleges, conferences, bookstores, and festivals ranging from Atlanta to Berlin to Toronto to NYC, Oakland and Amsterdam on topics ranging from Trick Dog Training to the epidemic of LGBTQ Youth Homelessness and Queer Fiction. Sassafras is an All-Star Trainer of The Year Certified Trick Dog Instructor, and AKC CGC & Tricks Evaluator. Sassafras writes regularly about cats for a variety of publications including Catster, Apartment Therapy, The New York Times, WIRED, and has appeared on AKC TV, BBC Radio and PBS Books.
