Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) wrote what came to be called "hardboiled" crime fiction. His Continental Op stories first appeared in Black Mask magazine in the early to mid 1920s. He later became known for his Sam Spade stories (The Maltese Falcon) and the Thin Man series.
