R.Z. Halleson grew up in Vernon County, Wisconsin where this book and her previous one, The Origin of Fear, take place. She is a graduate of the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, South Dakota State University, Brookings, and received an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Business, Northwestern University.
