Tony Griffin has been a Clareman from birth, and he began his hurling career with local club Ballyea. He has been a member of Co. Clare intercounty hurling team since 2002 and, having been nominated in 2004 and 2005, was inducted into the GAA All-Star hurling team in 2006.

He founded the Tony Griffin Foundation in 2007, after the death of his father from cancer motivated him to begin a charity cycle across Canada and Ireland. Tony holds an honours degree in economics from NUI Galway and graduated on scholarship, with honours, from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology. In 2008 he founded Sports Academy International with Clare footballer Tomas Madigan, a company which offers training camps and sports specific teambuilding to professional and amateur sports teams.
