Vampire Game

Published 17 June 2003
In an epic battle, King Phelios defeats the Vampire King Duzell, but both monarchs are mortally wounded. As the two lay dying, Duzell prophesies that the two will meet again after their death, and vows that he will be triumphant. At least half the prophesy is proven true when Duzell is resurrected 100 years later, as a baby wildcat who is rescued and adopted by Ishtar, who just happens to be the great-granddaughter of his nemesis, King Phelios. Ishtar is a playful girl with an iron will and a penchant for pranks, a trait that distresses her caretaker, Sir Keld, and the dashing, but often bumbling, imperial guard, Captain Darres. Ishtar is not, however, the reincarnation of Phelios, leaving the now feline Duzell to continue his quest for revenge...with the surprisingly cooperative Ishtar as his companion!

Once upon a time, King Phelios defeated the Vampire King Duzell. Duzell is then reincarnated decades later as a kyawl, a cat that coincidentally becomes a pet for Ishtar, princess of the Holy Pheliosta Kingdom. Ishtar is a young and saucy princess who disagrees with the divine right of passage of the monarchy, and instead feels that the leader of Pheliosta should earn his...or her...position of power and respect. She decides to aid Duzell in his thirst for revenge by helping him locate the reincarnation of King Phelios himself. To confirm the identity of the reincarnation of his former enemy, Duzell will have to taste his blood, not the easiest activity when trying to maintain a low profile in an enemy camp. Ishtar, though, is struck with an idea. Along with Duzell, she visits her aunt, Ramia, who has three boys, Ishtar's cousins Seiliez, Laphiji and Vord who all live in the La Naan Kingdom. Ishtar is convinced that one of them has to be the reincarnation of the renowned King of Pheliosta. Ishtar makes a deal with Ramia that she will marry whichever cousin wins the martial arts championship in La Naan. Blood will spill, and Duzell will taste it.
But Ishtar's bodyguard, Darres, joins the competition as well, intent on not letting any cousin win, saving Ishtar from a frivolous marriage and from the twisted, evil machinations of the cousins, whom he knows are conniving to come out victorious. Darres also discovers the disturbing truth that one of the cousins may not be of Phelios' blood.

On a careless impulse, Ishtar promised her aunt, the Lady Ramia of La Naan, that she will marry the prince that wins the annual Martial Arts Competition in La Naan. Darres, Jill and Krai find out about this, and are furiously looking for a way to get her out of this fiasco. Ishtar, however, has a backup plan. The vampire Duzell, disguised as Ishtar, has been fighting in the competition, and winning. However, it may all be for naught, as Sharlen, a mysterious vampire, has been using black magic to help Prince Seiliez's quest for Ishtar's hand...Under Sharlen's spell, the prince is suddenly blessed with amazing strength and apparently cannot be harmed. Unsurprisingly, he has quickly become a contender in the competition, and now seems likely to win it. The simplest conclusion would be for Darres to fight the noble fight and defeat Seiliez in the tournament, however, things take a turn for the worse when they find out from Yujinn that the princes may have been adopted. If they're not blood descendants of Phelios, they are not eligible for Ishtar's hand in marriage.
Darres, Jill and Krai scramble to find out the facts, and discover the truth may lie with Murra, a courtesan that Prince Seiliez regularly visits. This is a dangerous situation, intermingled with greed, magic, love, and family secrets. Can anybody help Ishtar out of this disaster...?

Under Lady Ramia's orders, Vord reluctantly dumps Duzell in the middle of the forest. Wanting to return to Ishtar before the fight, Duzell is rushing through the forest when he stumbles on a fight between Laphiji and Sharlen. Thinking that Sharlen might be a reincarnation of one of his men from his previous life, Duzell prevents Laphiji from killing Sharlen. However, instead of showing gratitude, Sharlen attacks Duzell and Laphiji, and leaves them bleeding in the forest to die...Darres and Murra are saved from certain death at the hands of undead assassins when Laphiji and Lady Ramia come to their rescue. Sharlen escapes, and Lady Ramia orders Laphiji to follow and capture him. Later, Lady Ramia finally discloses the true origins of her three sons to Ishtar and Darres. Realizing that in all the confusion and commotion they had forgotten to check him, Ishtar and Duzell had planned on returning to La Naan to see if Seiliez might be Phelios. However, through an unexpected twist of fate (or some would say misuse of fate) they end up North, in the kingdom of Ci Xeneth. Ci Xeneth is the domain of Lord Jened, Ishtar's uncle, an evil, murderous man with an obsession for Ruelles and a burning desire to gain the throne of Pheliosta. Deciding to make the best of the situation, Ishtar and Duzell decide to postpone their return trip to La Naan until they've had a chance to determine if either Jened or his daughter Falan is carrying the soul of Phelios. Wishing to avoid discovery by Ishtar's twisted uncle, the pair gain access to the castle by befriending Jened's knights, and convincing them that they are actually two siblings named Ishta and Du. llsaide, their captain, seems particularly taken with Du, and after Ishta casually informs him that Du is her sister--and available--asks the increasingly frustrated Duzell to be his girl. Reluctantly, Duzell decides to play along, knowing that this will get him closer to Jened and Falan.
As Duzell contends with an amorous Illsaide, Ishtar is confronted by Diaage, Jened's High Sorcerer. Diaage is not to be trusted, but he does reveal the dark secret behind the creation of Ruelles, and the reason her uncle keeps a collection of vicious monsters in his dungeon. What he doesn't reveal to Ishtar, however, is that he knows her real identity and mistakenly believes she is the reincarnation of Phelios. What he intends to do with this information is a mystery, and one that may be revealed as the castle is attacked by a powerful monster and an unexpected visitor, Prince Vord, shows up looking for Princess Ishtar. In the bonus comic, "The Sun and the Moon," learn about Darres' background, and the path to his position as Ishtar's personal bodyguard.

Ishtar's secret visit to Ci Xeneth has not gone unnoticed by her cousin Falan, who promises to keep it a secret from her father, the evil Lord Jened. However, with his unexpected arrival, can Ishtar expect the same from Vord? Ishtar, now aware of the truth behind the Merarim War, understands the hate that the monsters have for Lord Jened, and their desire to save their brethren from a horrible fate at his hands. Duzell, playing his role as the mysterious Illsaide's fiancee, learns about Illsaide's true feelings, which lay not with the disguised Vampire King but with the beautiful (well...on the inside, at least) Falan. However, his mission to find Phelios takes a back seat when an army of deadly and fairly cranky monsters invade the castle of Ci Xeneth to avenge Lord Jened's destruction of their home and people. An invasion that receives an unexpected assist from Ishtar, who frees the monsters being held captive in the dungeon, only to discover that angry monsters who have been held against their will tend to harbor a mad grudge. During the chaos, the identity of the mysterious old man, the truth about High Sorcerer Diaage, and Illsaide's dark secret will all be revealed.
Darres also shows up after Vord tells him what's going on, but whether he'll actually help or let the princess sort out her own mess is a different story entirely.
