Now, as they approach the bridge to the middle-caste district, they stop to rest in Kyrie, a desperado town. They meet Nelli, a friendly young man who shows them to an inn. Nelli's so helpful that neither Lag nor Niche notice him steal Lag's Crossing Pass!

Suede Lag almost breaks the record time on his Letter Bee test, securing a job as a Letter Bee! But his celebration ends with unwelcome news: the record holder, Gauche Suede, is no longer a Letter Bee! Shocked, Lag seeks out Gauche's little sister Sylvette to learn exactly what happened. But Sylvette has no answers, only memories and a broken heart. Gauche would never abandon his sister like that! Could it be he lost his heart...or his life?!

The ensuing chaos pays off for Lag when the doctor reveals that Gauche - Lag's missing hero - paid the doctor a visit before he disappeared.

The Lighthouse in the Wasteland Lag finds his long-lost hero Gauche Suede! But Gauche's heart is so depleted that he has no memory of his former self, and now goes by Noir the Marauder. Lag's only hope to recover the real Gauche is a special letter bullet that will convey Lag's heart to his friend. Lag's not sure how to go about writing the perfect letter, but his Letter Bee duties offer some good lessons in connecting hearts.

Noir's trail leads Lag and Niche to the icy northern town Blue Notes Blues. It just so happens Niche was born here. Lag and Niche uncover her mysterious origins: a sacred underground lake...where her brethren still dwell.

Lag arrives at the town of Lament determined to save the heart of his fallen hero, Gauche Suede. Gauche's rebel organization, Reverse, may be hiding out in the town's convent. To get in, Lag will have to use his wits, and he has no idea what-or who-awaits him there.
