Join Sherman, the lovable shark, and his aquatic cohorts in the comfy environs of Sherman's Lagoon.
Sharks have always fascinated Jim Toomey. “I was the only one rooting for the shark in Jaws,” he says. Sherman’s Lagoon fans don’t just root for the dim-witted Sherman, they devour his books by the net-full.
This is the latest collection of the popular strip, which takes a satirical, sea-floor look at modern culture through the eyes of Sherman , his sidekick sea turtle friend Fillmore, and schools of other coral reef critters in their remote tropical paradise.

Book 23

“I was the only one rooting for the shark in Jaws,” author Jim Toomey.

Sherman's Lagoon is a fantasy place situated somewhere in the tropics. It's inhabited by a motley crew of sea creatures, whose marine lives suspiciously mirror our own. Through his comic strip, cartoonist Jim Toomey explores many of the issues that we face daily in our world on dry land. His characters attempt new business ventures, go on disastrous dates, try fad diets, and read the latest best-selling books.

Sherman's Lagoon appeals to adults and children alike. Children, preteens, and teens enjoy its underwater theme and the sometimes rough-and-tumble world of life in the ocean. Adults enjoy the social commentary that is a common thread in the strip.

There is also an educational aspect to the strip that gives it a unique place in the comics. Toomey explores environmental themes in a light, apolitical way. And, he takes his characters on road trips, where they explore different parts of the ocean and meet native animals along the way.

by Jim Toomey

Published 25 November 2021
A year's worth of marine-life amusement with the cast and crew of Sherman's Lagoon.

The sharks, turtles, and crabs of Sherman’s Lagoon enjoy a complex society below the ocean’s surface, with a local government, school system, and even their own radio station. And like all advanced cultures, there’s no lack of drama. A visiting shark oil salesman shows up to hock a strange new elixir, and later, a consultant arrives to help the laconic locals hone their killer instincts. When Kahuna feels his powers wane, Sherman and Hawthorne help the ancient stone deity get his groove back. And after Sherman and friends hop a flight to see a rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center, Hawthorne accidentally goes from spectator to passenger. Once you dip into these Adventures in Aquaculture, you’ll want to stay awhile.

Book 27

Take a dive into the hilarious underwater world of Sherman's Lagoon, where humor, conflict, local politics, and pop culture all collide in an amusing maelstrom of aquatic comedy.

New discoveries, travels, and creations are all underway in the Kapupu Lagoon. A search for other sea creatures leads to the discovery of The Wandering Meatloaf and The London Fatberg. But those new creatures aren’t the only ones being found—on land, the Beach Apes have discovered the beaked whale despite Sam’s existence being no secret in the sea. In one of his latest scams, Hawthorne decides to create Crabwarts Academy of Magic. It’s not until Hawthorne grows a rat tail, Fillmore’s walking on flamingo legs, and Sherman’s got a rhino horn that Hawthorne realizes he’s no match for real magic. Dive into the latest Sherman’s Lagoon collection, where you might find that you need this book like a fish needs a bicycle… OK, so maybe a fish doesn’t need a bicycle, but this book is pretty hilarious all the same!

Onward and Downward

by Jim Toomey

Published 5 October 2017
Sherman’s Lagoon is an imaginary lagoon somewhere in the tropics, inhabited by a cast of sea creatures whose lives are curiously similar to our own. Through his comic strip, cartoonist Jim Toomey explores many of the issues that we face daily in our world on dry land. By putting them in a different context, he helps us laugh at ourselves. His characters attempt new business ventures, go on disastrous dates, try fad diets, and read the latest best-selling books. But, they also have problems that are unique to fish. Should you bring shrimp to the holiday party? Will shrimp be there? Sherman, the main character, is a great white shark who is completely unaware of how intimidating his species can be. He gets pushed around by the other characters, namely: Hawthorne the hermit crab, Fillmore the sea turtle, and his wife, Megan, who is another great white shark, of course.
