English in China

1. The objective of this volume is not simply to assemble the empirical studies about the creative use, and commodification, of English in China; rather, it also aims to carry out a theoretical discussion on the possible relationship, intersection and tension between language creativity and language commodification with special reference of English in China, a country which, to some extent, has been westernized, but has kept its unique social, cultural, political and educational traditions.
2. The first attempt to discuss the possible relationship, intersection and tension between the two seemingly inseparable research topics, the collection will be inspiring for further interdisciplinary dialogue and debate.
3. The empirical studies assembled in Parts II and III involve a wide range of texts, genres and practices and offer breadth and depth for exploration. Such a feature may help the development of several research agenda for further study.
4. The volume is concerned with creativity and commodification of English situated exclusively in China, a collection of this kind still remains a lacuna in the literature.
