Hell is not what you think it is
Hell is a terraformed asteroid somewhere in the depths of space. It's where Lucifer and the Mage Web send their most dangerous and uncontrollable demons and magic-users.
And there is no escape from Hell, because every prisoner must pass through Hell's Gate, which strips away every shred of their magic, trapping them there for eternity. Because in Hell there is no such thing as death.
So when a demon from Hell kills the First Webmaster, the Web is shocked and terrified. Not only is this impossible, but the Web mages have jumped into enough futures to know that the murder of the First signals the beginning of the total destruction of the Mage Web.
