Old Lorries

by John Woodhams

Published July 1985
In recent years there has been an enormous growth of interest in old lorries. Since the first London to Brighton run for historic commercial vehicles took place in May 1962 more and more people have become involved in their restoration and preservation. Both enthusiastic individuals and commercial operators have rescued decaying specimens from scrapyards of farmyards and carefully restored them to their original condition. This book traces the story of the motor lorry, from the emergence of the petrol-drive lorry at the end of the nineteenth century through the development of road transport in the First World War. About the authorJohn Woodham's interest in old lorries developed from an earlier interest in railways and old buses. He runs 1937 and 1949 Bedford coaches and has written several other books on transport including the Shire Album Funicular Railways.
