Stella had always known about Camp Allegro. Her mother had gone there as a girl and had never stopped seeing the friends she had made there. But Stella had never expected to go to Camp Allegro herself. After all, it had been shut up for years. But now one of the old campers was reviving it, and Stella's mother was determined that she go. Fortunately her friend Kim was to go, too.

Actually, the camp wasn't half bad. It wasn't a French camp, or an art camp, or a swimming camp, or a weight-loss camp, it was simply a camp to have fun. And it was fun. There was tennis and horseback riding and basketball and volleyball and swimming and crafts and all the things that camps are supposed to have. Once Kim and Stella got over the shock of living in tents and having all those people around all the time, they enjoyed it.

Yet there were surprises, and some of them not very nice. Someone threw a rock at Stella when she was sitting in her favourite get-away-from-it-all spot. And later, when she and Kim were investigating a mysterious swampy area where strange things had happened, an unseen person actually tied Stella up for a few minutes. Someone seemed not to be happy that Camp Allegro had been reactivated. But who? And what did that person want?

Kim and Stella kept their suspicions, and the odd things that had happened to them, secret for almost too long. Camp Allegro's favourite song, "We're Allegro born, we're Allegro bred, and when we die, we're Allegro dead," came very close to being prophetic.
