Nature lovers not only in Minnesota but in adjoining states as well will find this an excellent guide for the identification of the common wild flowers native to the region. There are detailed drawings of more than 300 species of wild flowers that are commonly found growing in Minnesota and the nearby states. The pen-and-ink drawings are by Wilma Monserud, who was for many years a botanical artist in the University of Minnesota department of botany. The descriptions of the plants accompanying each drawing as well as an introduction, are by Gerald B. Ownbey, professor of botany at the University of Minnesota.A page is devoted to each drawing and the accompanying text. In many cases the illustration shows the entire plant, in order to indicate the growth pattern. In others, only a branch or part of the plant is shown, if that is more useful for identification. Detailed drawings of single parts of a plant are included wherever they may be helpful for close identification. The drawings are superb examples of botanical illustration, technically accurate and at the same time artistically beautiful. The arrangement of the pictures and text in alphabetical order according to plant families, genera, and species makes it easy for those not familiar with the classification system used by professional botanists to use the book. An index to the common names of the plants shown is a help in finding the proper illustration when only the common name is known. In the descriptions of the plants, the use of technical terms is kept to a minimum, and all of these terms are defined and, in some instances, illustrated in a glossary. Nature lovers, teachers, students, and others interested in learning about the outdoors will derive pleasure and knowledge from this book.
