In 1996, fourteen members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement raided a party at the official residence of Japan's ambassador to Peru. The militants, disguised as catering staff, were able to gain access to the complex without detection. With a huge array of weapons, including AKM rifles, Uzi submachine guns and hand grenades, the militants took hostage hundreds of high-level diplomats, government and military officials and business executives. This book tells the extraordinary story of the hostage rescue. The author, a retired admiral, was both a hostage and a key player in the rescue. The crisis lasted 126 days, and was eventually brought to an end by the Peruvian Armed Forces. Through the use of a number of tunnels and explosive charges, the commandos were able to take control of the building. Only one hostage and two soldiers were killed in the operation; all fourteen revolutionaries were killed. This compelling book, which is filled with action, military detail, intrigue and betrayal, reads like a fast-paced novel, and provides a fascinating account of this spectacular hostage rescue.
