The "Food and Drink" series aims to familiarize children with food from various countries around the world. Each book covers one country and explains how the food is grown and processed, and how it is prepared, cooked and served. Recipes of varying complexity are included which range from simple biscuits to complete meals. The series is also intended to provide background reading for GCSE and standard grade in Scotland. In this illustrated volume, the author looks at Jewish food and drink and sets it against the background of Jewish history and culture in Israel and the Diaspora. The climate and geography of Israel is discussed and the author explores the religious importance that is placed upon the processing, selling and cooking of food, with special emphasis being given to Jewish terms such as "Kosher" and "Shabbat". To illustrate these and other terms there are descriptions of the rules and rituals observed in the preparation of food, and examples are given of traditional and contemporary recipes. Food connected with Jewish festivals is also given a special mention.
