The National Science Education Standards were developed to bring students to appropriate levels of understanding in science and technology. In this addendum, the committee explores how to bring the science and technology standard alive in K-12 classrooms.Teaching to achieve this standard is a serious responsibility for science educators. Technology and its interplay with science underlie many subject areas in today's classrooms; this book provides a framework for teachers to effectively identify and explore this relationship across K-12 curricula.The volume argues convincingly that it's in everyone's interests for science and technology to be presented in America's classrooms. It details the relationship between science (know-why) and technology (know-how), discusses how student curiosity about one of these realms often leads to curiosity and exploration of the other, and highlights the importance of technological literacy to our future. The committee also identifies important themes including the analogy of technological design and scientific inquiry around which teachers can build classroom experiences.This book discusses the progression of understanding at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and suggests grade-appropriate activities and resources, including material newly available on the Internet.
