Thomas Paine is one of the foremost thinkers of the eighteenth century and a key radical figure in both British and American history. Yet in spite of his importance, Paine's political legacy has been largely overlooked. This collection of essays by an international team of scholars looks at how Paine's work has been reinterpreted over the two hundred years since his death. Contributors focus on how contemporary writers appropriated Paine's name and style to forward their own religious agenda and the distortion of his theory of government by the American right wing. The use of Paine's writing in working-class movements on both sides of the Atlantic is also considered, as well as the controversial attempts to memorialize him in England and America.
