When beautiful Lucy Grey and her brother, William, become orphans, their futures are organized by hard-nosed Aunt Esther Grey, who is very firmly holding the family purse strings. Whilst Will is sent to Oxford University, Lucy is found a post as at Melbury House in London as governess to Lord Hallburgh's two motherless children. However, Lucy soon senses a strange and threatening atmosphere in which, despite Edmund Hallburgh's aristocratic position and authority, the household is run by his sister, the autocratic Honourable Caroline Hallburgh. She is much older than her brother and although very beautiful, has been physically disabled since birth. This has profoundly affected her personality and she sees the growing friendship between Lucy and Edmund as a threat to her own position and influence. Just as she destroyed the tragic young Lady Catherine, so Caroline is determined to break Lucy Grey. Will Lucy, brought up as an independent spirit and always encouraged to "tell the truth and shame the devil," be able to persuade Edmund Hallburgh of his sister's evil actions and true character? Is happiness within her reach?
