Two decades ago, a seminal paper on representation of the likelihood of a set of pedigree data led to what later became known as the Elston-Stewart (ES) algorithm. This volume testifies to the far-reaching effects of the work of Elston and Stewart (1971), which had a strong and lasting impact on statistical human genetics in that it presented a method for recursively computing likelihoods for observations on members of pedigrees of an arbitrary size. The papers presented were solicited from several early collaborators of Elston and from selected authors whose current work relates to the ES algorithm.
