Inderpal Sumal was born and brought up in Nairobi, Kenya. He attended Park Road Primary School, City Park Primary School and the Duke of Gloucester School in Nairobi. He was an accomplished athlete and in high school won the Victor Ludorum trophy for the best athlete of the year at the annual school sports day. He joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1966 and enjoyed the experiences of his postings to Cyprus, Wildenrath in Germany, Northern Ireland and Falkland Islands. He retired from the RAF as Flight Lieutenant in May 2005. He worked as a Crown Servant in London after his retirement from the RAF. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II honored him with the member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) award on February 16, 2012. Hockey has always been the passion of his life and he has participated in national and international tournaments, excelling in a sport he has loved all his life. In October 2022, he represented Wales Over 70s team at the World Masters Hockey World Cup played at the Olympic stadium in Tokyo. His team beat South Africa in finals to be crowned the World Champions in the over 70s age group. He is an avid reader and is enjoying his retirement with his family and grandsons Sahib and Gurjot, while keeping himself fit with gardening, running and playing hockey.
