A pour quoi story in the tradition of southern folk tales that explains why there are white alligators. The White Alligator is a funny adventure story set in 1800 Louisiana. Part I introduces the protagonist, a raccoon named Boudra, and his chance encounter with a naturalist named John. Boudra tells how Pierre, a pesky alligator, is suspected of eating a popular animal (as long as he ate unpopular animals no one seemed to mind). All the animals decide the time had come for something to be done. However no one had a clue on how to deal with a 14 foot alligator. The alligator problem evolves into a never ending series of noisy night time debates where nothing is accomplished except the interruption the raccoon's sleep. After the alligator unsuccessful attempt to eat Boudra's best friend, the brave raccoon with the help of a few reluctant friends wage a night time battle of comedy and deception to rid the area of the alligator menace. In the process they create a few surprise. 80 colorful illustrations.
