Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist, essayist, and poet. His first books gained much contemporary attention, and after a literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined in the mid-1850s. When he died in 1891, he was almost completely forgotten. A confluence of publishing events in the 1920s brought about a reassessment now commonly called "the Melville Revival". Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, has become Melville's most famous work and is often considered one of the greatest literary works of all time. This collection, contains his best works, in their original editions: Typee, Omoo, Mardi, Redburn, White-Jacket, Moby-Dick, Pierre, or The Ambiguities, Benito Cereno, I and My Chimney, Israel Potter: His Fifty Years of Exile & The Confidence-Man.
