William "Hank" Massa was called up for World War II service in October of 1943. He spent the next two years and two months with the United States Marines Amphibious Forces, and during that time he wrote home as often as he could. All and all, he sent over a hundred letters to Corona, Queens - and his mother saved them all. The letters chronicle his journey from boot camp in Maryland, to California bases, to fierce battle in the South Pacific, to his recovery - and hearing of Allied victory - in Hawaii. We felt these letters needed to be shared, as they shed a unique light on both the war and the generation that we now call "The Greatest." - Katie Massa Kennedy
