This work looks into the heart of what the author sees as a political crisis. It examines the ways in which Australian mainstream politics has responded to the crises of the 1980s and 1990s, with particular attention to the political rhetoric of the past two national election campaigns, and asks what such policies promise in Australia and how the future is conceived in Australian politics. Walter argues for the necessity of a politics capable of expressing and addressing common interests - capable of relating to a community beyond the market to focus on ideas of citizenship and of civil society.
