The "Portfolios" video series offers a model of curriculum and evaluation in which students have a strong voice inplanning and documenting their work. Filmed in elementary classrooms during the University of New Hampshire's Manchester Portfolio Project, the videos show how teachers and students implement portfolios to develop inner standards of excellence in reading, writing, and evaluation.Students Find Value in Themselves
This video follows students of diverse backgrounds and abilities as they reflect on their lives as whole persons, inside and outside of school. They discuss artifacts and, through writing, explore special interests, family, friends, community events, and schoolwork. In the process, they come to value themselves as learners and think about what they want to learn next.
Students Find Value in Each Other
This video takes you into portfolio classrooms where students and teachers learn from and with one another. By working together, students learn to trust and value others as resources. To make their goals more concrete and to develop personal responsibility, they are asked to create specific plans outlining what they want to learn and how they can make that learning happen.
Students Find Value in Their Work
By focusing first on what they can do, these students become actively engaged in school, regardless of learning history. They document the value they find in their work, continually asking, "What will I put in my portfolio to capture effort and growth?" As they work together discussing and writing reflections on their progress, students come to recognize what's working, what's not, and how they might improve.
This program will benefit all staff, parents, and community groups interested in helping students become independent as well as collaborative learners.
