J. D. Crichton here explores the feasts of the Blessed Virgin and their meaning. The greater feasts of Mary have their roots as far back as the fifth century in the Eastern part of what was still the undivided great church. In his commentaries, Mgr Crichton tries to keep close to the great tradition, that is to the place and role of Mary in the history of salvation, and to the intimate association of the Virgin Mother to her son, Jesus Christ. The book also considers what are called the minor feasts of Mary, many of which have their origins in the concentration on the Blessed Virgin herself which developed from the twelfth century onwards. The final chapters consider some of the prayers and hymns of the Marian liturgy, and the use of the Psalms.
